Trailer: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

As is the odd and indeed curious wont of filmmakers, you can't have just one film with a kinda maybe similar theme at once; more often than seems explainable, you get a glut.

So while one waits for any more news of the film of The Time Traveler's Wife - no poster, no trailer, no website, no-show at the Toronto Film Festival as had been anticipated, a release date for the US that has vanished from the imdb page linked above, but with so little publicity, one has doubts that its release is anytime soon... and there's no sign of an Australian release date.  Sometime in 2009?

There's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button , based on a short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald.   Also involving (literary) time travel.  No poster, but there's an official website , and a new non-teaser trailer.  Film starts in Australia on Boxing Day.

The Time Traveler's Wife is one of my absolute favorite books. I am not sure I want a film of it. They usually don't do the book justice. Perhaps, since this other film is coming out, they are holding back the release to let their film stand alone.

I finally got around to looking up Diana Gabaldon and I ordered Outlander as it looks to be the first. Is that correct and which others should I look for?

Thanks.

re TTW: you could be right about the competition, not wanting to flood the market.

I take your point about the book being sufficient; but sometimes, when it's done well, a film is another window into that world. eg. 84 Charing Cross Rd, where I love both book and film.

re Gabaldon: ah, you've inspired me to a whole blog entry!

Oh I love 84 Charing Cross but I never read the book. Perhaps I should.

Yes, as a book lover, you should. Get an edition with the follow-up in it - The Duchess of Bloomsbury St. I still have the Reader's Digest issue which I bought on a second hand book stall at a fete as a teenager, which was my discovery of 84 Charing Cross Rd.

So how the hell did I not know about this movie?!?!! I now know what I'm doing Boxing Day, no matter how much I have to pay to see it.

As for books, have you read:

Piers Anthony, Bearing an hourglass (part of the excellent Incarnations of Immortality series)

Jack Finney, Time and again (and his next book, Time after time)

Ken Grimwood, Replay?

This movie was actually filmed a couple of years ago - it's had quite a long gestation. Sounds like the fate of TTW too. But if they're good, satisfying films in the end, that's worth waiting for. In the case of B Button, they've 'based' it with some looseness - shifting the time period, for instance, so it involves the present rather than remaining wholly within the past (as you would expect from when FSF wrote it).

I haven't read any of those - thanks for the heads up! Will have to seek them out.
